Moscow has asked the U.S to make sure that the Russian crew members onboard the seized shadow fleet tanker Marinera are respected, given fair treatment and their basic human rights are upheld.

A spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the U.S forces boarded the Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic.

The ministry has stressed that the U.S. should not obstruct the crew members’ ‘soonest return to their motherland’.

The Pentagon announced the seizure of the tanker on social media, citing violation of US sanctions as the cause.

The tanker was intercepted in the North Atlantic pursuant to a warrant issued by a U.S federal court.

The USCGC Cutter Munro and its crew played an important role in tracking the tanker.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said that the vessel was detained in connection with the embargo on Venezuelan oil.
