Belgium’s ports disrupted again amid national strike

Belgium’s ports are once again facing operational disruptions due to a national strike led by the ABVV-ACOD union.

This marks the third nationwide industrial action to impact the country’s transport and logistics sector since March. The latest strike, focused on the public sector, reflects ongoing resistance to the De Wever government’s austerity and reform agenda.

With no resolution in sight, further disruptions and delays are likely in the coming weeks.

As of 09:15 on Tuesday, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges reported considerable disruption, particularly at its lock infrastructure.

Currently, 14 seagoing vessels are waiting to enter the port, while 11 are delayed in departing. Inland navigation remains possible but is limited due to reduced lock availability.

Towage services are functioning at around 70% capacity, and pilotage operations are also impacted.

While port authorities report no major disruption from reduced shipping assistance services, delays at the locks are contributing to mounting congestion.
