Yanmar organised and participated in two engaging seminars in December, focusing on technology development towards alternative fuels for marine engines.
The first seminar, held on December 3 at the Athenaeum InterContinental in Athens, Greece, focused on the role of alternative fuels in tackling carbon emissions.
After a brief company introduction, George Dimopoulos, Associate Professor, NTUA, and Scientific advisor at DNV presented “Ship energy efficiency and decarbonisation: The role of the engine and its systems.” This was followed by Bill Stamatopoulos, Verifuel Global Business Development Director at BV group with his presentation “Biofuels unveiled: the best stepping stone to decarbonisation.”
Zigor Uriondo Arrue, a Professor at the University of Bilbao concluded the line-up with “Possible Future Fuels, One Size Does Not Fit All.” Yanmar finished the day with a few words about the new version of service support tool Shipsweb, which is now free to use. Both speakers and ship owners enjoyed the event, appreciating the opportunity to be part of a discussion about Yanmar’s future alternative fuel developments.
A second technical seminar with different speakers took place on December 5th at The Hilton, Istanbul, Turkey.

All brands are busy making emission-reducing systems. Yanmar has also come to introduce its machines working with methanol, hydrogen and alternative fuel systems. Regulations will become very strict in the near future. Especially in May 2025, Turkey will be designated as an emission control area. All emissions and exhaust outputs will be inspected
As well as general environmental matters, Turkey’s unique place in global shipping was discussed by Ahmet Yaşar Canca, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tmmob Gemi̇mo. His presentation, “Risks in Turkish Maritime,” started with his observations about Yanmar engines: “Their R&D department works hard to ensure that the equipment is not complex in maintenance. Even the complex ones are separated modularly and designed in such a way that people with average technical knowledge can perform maintenance, and they explain them step by step. When working with Yanmar’s generators, the ship’s personnel are very comfortable and can perform maintenance very easily.”
Analysing the current trends in the industry he observed:

A globalisation with 7 regions is coming. The Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea are among the regions of this globalisation. This gives us a strategic advantage. There are carbon regulations. When you bring a container from China, it will pay half of the fuel it burns as carbon emission tax. But when you are traveling from Turkey to Europe, it takes at most 1.5 days. If alternative energy, electric or hybrid ships can be built in Turkey, you can be the most competitive ship owner in the world with that one-day carbon emission tax
Feedback from delegates was good, so expect to see more events like this in the future. Show previews will appear in upcoming newsletters.
