HD Hyundai Unveils Korea's Inaugural Humanoid Robot Initiative

South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai is at the forefront of an exciting new venture: the advancement of welding humanoids. Teaming up with global leaders in AI and robotics, including Persona AI and Vazil Company, this initiative aims to tackle labor shortages in heavy industries like shipbuilding.

The partnership was officially announced on May 7, 2025, in Houston, Texas.The goal? To create humanoid robots that can handle intricate welding tasks within shipyards—an area known for its demanding work conditions. Persona AI will take charge of crafting the humanoid hardware and smart control systems, while Vazil Company will concentrate on developing specialized welding tools and testing environments. Simultaneously occurring, HD KSOE will provide essential engineering data from its shipyards to ensure smooth integration.

this project marks a critically important milestone as Korea’s first foray into welding humanoids. With prototypes expected by late 2026 and field trials slated for 2027, the initiative promises to boost production efficiency while enhancing safety standards in shipyard operations.

“Humanoid welders are set to revolutionize productivity,” said Dong-ju Lee, senior Vice President at HD KSOE. “Our vision is a smart shipyard where humans work hand-in-hand with smart robots.” This collaboration aims not just to improve output but also alleviate some of the physical demands placed on workers.What sets these new robots apart from traditional industrial machines? They’re designed not only for repetitive tasks but also equipped with advanced observation skills and decision-making capabilities. Young-hoon Song from HD Hyundai Robotics emphasized this point: “These aren’t your typical factory bots; they need to think critically about their surroundings.”

Nicolaus Radford,CEO of Persona AI,underscored the urgency behind this project: “With labor shortages becoming more pronounced—especially in high-risk areas like welding—the demand for robust autonomous humanoids has never been greater.” He views deploying these robots in real-world settings as crucial testing grounds that could redefine industry standards.

This collaboration represents a leap forward in industrial robotics by merging HD Hyundai’s extensive experience with cutting-edge technology from Persona AI and manufacturing expertise from Vazil Company.
