Brussels Airport Experiences Surge in Cargo Traffic
Brussels Airport saw a notable uptick in cargo traffic this April, with volumes climbing 11% year-over-year to hit 69,617 tonnes. The flown cargo segment also experienced an 11% boost, totaling 58,855 tonnes.
Interestingly, while full-freighter operations dipped by 9%, bellyhold cargo surged by 19%. Integrator services where especially robust, enjoying a remarkable increase of 27%,and trucked cargo saw a healthy rise of 12%.
The primary sources for imports included Asia,Africa, and North America. This trend mirrored the export landscape as well—Asia led the way again, followed closely by Africa and North america.
Flight Activity: Up by 5%
This April marked a growth in flight activity with movements up by 5% compared to last year. Passenger flights rose similarly at the same rate while cargo flights increased slightly more at 7%.
The average passenger count per flight reached about 150—a modest rise of around 3.5% from last year’s figures.
passenger Traffic: +8.5%
A total of over two million passengers—2,122,695 to be exact—traveled through Brussels Airport in April alone; that’s an impressive jump of 8.5%. This surge can largely be attributed to the Easter break for Dutch-speaking schools and the onset of May holidays for both Dutch- and French-speaking students towards month-end. Notably though, national union strikes on April 29 did throw some travel plans into disarray.
Around one in eight departing passengers were transfer travelers primarily heading to or coming from Africa and North America.
This month’s top destinations included Spain leading the pack followed by Italy and Türkiye; Germany came next along with Morocco and Portugal rounding out the list before France took its place alongside popular spots like the United States, Switzerland, and finally the UK.
