Exciting news is on the horizon for the Gulf Coast! The Galveston LNG Bunker Port (GLBP) is gearing up to be the first dedicated facility for LNG marine fuel in this region. With all necessary permits in hand, construction is set to kick off later this year, as confirmed by company leaders.

This ambitious project is a collaboration between Pilot LNG from Houston and Seapath, a branch of the Libra Group. Nestled on a 140-acre site along the texas City Ship channel, GLBP will strategically cater to major ports like Port Houston, Port of Galveston, and Port of Texas City.

The initiative aligns with global efforts to transition towards cleaner marine fuels as shipping companies strive to cut down emissions. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) presents itself as an effective substitute for high-sulfur fuel oil, enabling ship operators to comply with increasingly stringent environmental standards.

seapath has announced that they’ve received final green lights from both the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Coast Guard. They anticipate starting initial fuel deliveries by late 2027.

In its first phase,GLBP aims to produce around 360,000 gallons of LNG daily—doubling that capacity within a year after operations commence. This growth reflects an expanding market for LNG bunkering in the U.S., especially since it can be utilized as marine fuel without requiring export licenses in domestic waters.

This opens up fresh avenues for U.S. suppliers looking to directly serve local ports and shipping lines.According to Seapath’s president, they are poised at the forefront of this emerging market as pioneers in dedicated LNG marine fueling within the Gulf region. He emphasized that years of dedication and substantial investment have been poured into establishing GLBP as a vital clean energy hub locally.

With an estimated cost exceeding $300 million, once operational GLBP will stand out as onyl the second dedicated LNG bunkering facility across America—following JAX LNG located in Jacksonville, Florida.

The impact on maritime operations could be notable; take Port Houston as a notable example—it generates over $900 billion annually in economic value nationwide! The Libra Group’s involvement through Seapath also includes ownership stakes in Lomar Shipping and Americraft Marine—both key players globally in shipping and shipbuilding sectors.

Construction is slated to begin shortly with operations expected by late 2026 or early 2027.Keep your eyes peeled; this growth could reshape how we think about maritime fuels!
