The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has unveiled Volta 1, the first fully electric tugboat in Europe, developed in collaboration with Damen Shipyards Group. This innovative vessel follows the earlier introductions of Hydrotug adn Methatug, which utilize hydrogen and methanol respectively—both groundbreaking achievements in their own right. Collectively, these boats highlight the port’s dedication to exploring choice fuels.

Volta 1 features a Reversed Stern Drive (RSD) design with a unique double bow and patented Twin Fin skeg, ensuring stability and exceptional maneuverability weather it’s pushing or pulling. Impressively, this electric tug matches conventional diesel counterparts with a towing capacity of 70 tons and can reach speeds up to 12 knots.

Powered by advanced lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) batteries totaling 2,782 MWh, Volta 1 can operate for about 12 hours on one charge. It utilizes a rapid charging station that replenishes it’s power in just two hours.

Measuring at 24.73 meters long and weighing in at 607 tons, this vessel is engineered for rigorous port activities while maintaining zero emissions. In addition to Volta 1’s launch, five new energy-efficient RSD tugs have joined the fleet as part of an initiative to phase out older models that contribute significantly—around 85%—to the port’s CO₂ emissions.

These new diesel tugs come equipped with after-treatment systems designed to further minimize their environmental impact. This effort aligns with the port’s broader greening strategy aimed at replacing outdated technologies with enduring alternatives. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is actively experimenting with various fuels like hydrogen and biofuels alongside electricity to find optimal solutions regarding emissions reduction and operational efficiency. As one of the world’s top bunker ports, it aims to evolve into a multi-fuel hub offering diverse fuel options including low-carbon choices alongside conventional ones—a move intended not only for local benefit but also as an inspiration for ports globally.

Officials emphasize that Volta 1 represents more than just another boat; it embodies their commitment to sustainable innovation within maritime operations. The timing is particularly meaningful as it coincides with celebrations marking150 years since tug services began at the port—a blend of history and forward-thinking sustainability efforts.

Damen Shipyards Group has been instrumental throughout this journey; they commenced construction on six RSD tugs—including Volta 1—in Vietnam back in early2023. After traveling over10,000 kilometers by sea, these vessels reached Antwerp by November2024 where they underwent final preparations such as technical setups and crew training before entering service.

Port representatives have highlighted how crucial this partnership has been toward achieving environmental objectives while Damen officials take pride in delivering cutting-edge vessels that align perfectly with sustainability goals set forth by the port authority.
