ABS approves Samsung Heavy Industries’ Remote Operation Technology
ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its Samsung Remote Operation Center (SROC). The system enables remote management of maritime vessels and offshore units, enhancing operational efficiency and safety.
ABS reviewed the technology under its Requirements for Autonomous and Remote-Control Functions. SROC can remotely manage auxiliary systems, cargo handling, and ballast and trim machinery, demonstrating advanced remote-operation capability.
“Remote operation centers provide real-time monitoring and system oversight to support autonomous and remote-control applications,” said Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. “We are pleased to work with SHI to advance digital technologies that improve maritime operations and decision-making.”
Dong Yeon Lee, Executive Vice President of SHI’s Ship and Offshore Research Institute, said: “We are honored to receive this AIP from ABS. Our technology enables real-time monitoring and remote control for large vessels and offshore units, improving safety and maintenance and supporting remote inspections and unmanned operations. This achievement is a major step toward smart and autonomous ship management.”
