Port Arthur LNG Phase II Receives DOE Approval, Signifying a Milestone in Energy Exports Under Trump
A recent publication by the U.S. Department of Energy reveals that Secretary Chris Wright has given the green light for LNG exports to countries without free trade agreements from Port Arthur LNG Phase II,located in Jefferson County,Texas. This marks a notable change in policy as it is the first LNG export approval during President Trump’s tenure, contrasting sharply with the previous governance’s halt on such permits.
The Port Arthur project, managed by Sempra Energy, is set to have an impressive capacity of 1.91 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) for natural gas exports. This expansion builds on Phase I of Port Arthur, which is already under construction and expected to start exporting by 2027. Sempra also operates Cameron LNG in Louisiana and is developing Energia Costa Azul in Mexico, which aims to begin shipments of U.S.-sourced gas by 2026.
Secretary Wright emphasized that “Port Arthur LNG Phase II signifies a major growth prospect for our energy resources—transforming our abundant natural assets into enhanced energy security for Americans.” Tala Goudarzi from the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management pointed out that this advancement reflects a rising trend in U.S. LNG exports.
This latest approval represents Secretary Wright’s fifth endorsement for LNG export projects since taking office, bringing the total approved volume under his leadership to 11.45 Bcf/d. it follows up on feedback regarding the 2024 LNG Export Study released earlier this year.
The authorization aligns with broader goals set forth by the administration to establish America as a key player in global energy markets. As Secretary Wright noted, efforts are underway to “reinstate America’s position as a dependable energy supplier worldwide.”
