Transforming São Paulo's Suburban Rail: The Integration of ETCS Technology
As reported by a recent publication from ViaMobilidade, the Brazilian concessionaire has partnered with Alstom to implement ETCS Level 2 technology on its São Paulo lines 8 (Diamante) and 9 (Esmeralda).
This partnership comes as ViaMobilidade embarks on a long-term commitment to operate and maintain these two lines, which feature a gauge of 1,600 mm and utilize a direct current system. Since taking over in 2021, they have pledged approximately R$3.8 billion towards modernization efforts, including an order for 36 eight-car Series 8900 Metropolis trainsets from Alstom.
The ambitious R$1 billion signaling upgrade is set to wrap up within six years. The goal? To enhance operational efficiency, boost the frequency of trains running on these lines, and streamline travel times. With real-time monitoring capabilities in place, this initiative promises improved control over train movements while prioritizing safety.
“This marks an vital step forward for both Alstom and urban transportation in São Paulo,” noted Suely Sola, managing Director of Alstom Brazil and Head of Signaling & Infrastructure for Latin America on May 30. “The ETCS Level 2 system is cutting-edge technology that has already shown its effectiveness in various European cities. It will lead to safer, more efficient journeys.”
