On June 4, 2025, a collaborative workshop took place in Singapore involving the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), and its subsidiary MTI Co., Ltd.This initiative marks the beginning of a new series of trials for maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) as part of an agreement established in 2024 aimed at enhancing cooperation in maritime decarbonization, digital transformation, and workforce development.

The event saw participation from over 60 individuals representing various organizations including MPA, NYK, MTI, and the singapore Maritime Institute. Notable contributions came from industry stakeholders like ClassNK and Japan Radio Co., along with academic institutions such as the Technology Center for Offshore and Marine Singapore (TCOMS) and several local universities. As reported by MPA,these upcoming trials will delve into how autonomous vessels interact with port systems like their Vessel Traffic Information System. the objective is to enhance knowledge across multiple domains such as navigation safety protocols, route optimization strategies, fuel efficiency measures, AI-driven decision-making processes, vessel dialog frameworks, and cybersecurity practices.

Capt M. Segar from MPA emphasized that this partnership presents a meaningful prospect to explore innovative operations within Singapore’s port surroundings. He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating closely with NYK and MTI to advance safer and more smart shipping methods.

MTI President Hideki Suzuki echoed this sentiment by highlighting that this joint venture represents ample progress toward developing autonomous navigation technologies. He noted that MTI is excited to facilitate trials designed to foster safer operational standards for autonomous ships in Singapore’s bustling maritime landscape. The MPA serves as the regulatory body overseeing maritime activities in singapore while NYK stands out as a leading global shipping company managing nearly 900 vessels globally with a workforce exceeding 35,000 employees by March 2025. Simultaneously occurring, MTI specializes in research focused on transportation advancements within the NYK Group.
