Arrival of the UK’s First Class 99 Locomotives Marks a New Era for GB Railfreight
According to a recent report from Beacon Rail, the first pair of 30 Stadler Class 99 electro-diesel locomotives has made its way to Bristol, UK, as of June 10. These locomotives are set to revolutionize freight transport in the region.
The testing and commissioning phase will take place in Leicester, where Stadler will oversee maintenance for these Co-Co locos. The goal is to have them operational by late 2025, with additional units arriving throughout that year and into early 2026.
This Class 99 model was commissioned in response to the need for advanced electro-diesel technology capable of efficiently transporting heavy freight at mainline speeds across the UK’s rail network. it’s a specialized version of the EuroDual family designed specifically for Britain’s unique loading gauge constraints.
The introduction of these Co-Co locomotives is expected to considerably reduce emissions by replacing older class 66 diesel engines on partially electrified routes. They can reach speeds up to 120 km/h and deliver an extraordinary power output of about 6,000 kW when operating under a standard electrification system. Notably, their diesel engines comply with Stage IV emissions regulations.
“The arrival of our first two Class 99s marks an important step forward,” stated Iñigo Parra, CEO at Stadler Valencia. “These innovative vehicles promise not only enhanced efficiency but also contribute positively towards making rail transport more environmentally friendly.” p >john Smith, CEO of GB Railfreight added that “these new locomotives are designed for modern logistics needs—combining electric capabilities with renewable fuel options allows businesses greater flexibility in transporting goods.” p >Before heading off for testing at Velim in the Czech Republic, one locomotive was showcased at InnoTrans trade fair held in Berlin earlier this year—a testament to its cutting-edge design and technology. p > div >
