Maritime Trade Uninterrupted: Tankers Navigate Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Israel-Iran Tensions

According to a recent report by Reuters, merchant vessels are still navigating the Strait of Hormuz despite escalating tensions following Israel’s military actions against Iran. While the U.S.-led Combined Maritime Force confirmed that commercial traffic remains steady, some shipowners are opting to steer clear of this vital waterway.

historically, Iran has threatened to block the Strait in response to Western pressures, which could have dire consequences for global trade and oil prices. the Combined maritime force reassured that “the Strait of Hormuz remains open,” but noted that recent events have heightened concerns about potential regional conflicts.

In light of these developments, both Greece and Britain have advised their shipping fleets to avoid certain areas like the Gulf of Aden and keep meticulous records of voyages through Hormuz. Jakob Larsen from BIMCO highlighted an increase in caution among shipowners who prefer not to traverse the Red Sea or Persian Gulf at this time.

Larsen also pointed out that if there’s any perception of U.S. involvement in attacks, it could substantially escalate tensions—potentially leading to missile strikes on vessels or even sea mines being deployed in Hormuz. Israel claims its operations target Iranian nuclear sites and military infrastructure; however, Iran firmly denies any intentions toward developing nuclear weapons.

The importance of the Strait cannot be overstated; it serves as a crucial artery for oil transport wiht no viable alternatives available. INTERTANKO emphasized that any disruption here would profoundly impact global economic stability.

Greek ship owners received directives urging them to report details about their vessels operating in this region due to rising military activities nearby. Given Greece’s status as home to one of the largest tanker fleets globally, these precautions are especially importent.

Additionally, UK-flagged ships—including those registered under Gibraltar and Bermuda—are similarly advised against sailing through high-risk areas like southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden unless they implement stringent security measures during their journeys.

Meanwhile, operations by the European Union’s naval mission Aspides continue without interruption while keeping a close watch on regional developments.
