Rail freight innovations on show as Transport Logistic 2025 ‘makes an invisible industry visible’

GERMANY: ‘Nothing works without logistics’, and the Transport Logistic event ‘makes visible what often remains invisible in everyday life: logistics is far more than lorries on the highway, it is the basis for the economy to function’, according to Stefan Rummel, CEO of trade fair organiser Messe München.

The event is held in München every two years, and covers the rail, air, road haulage and third-party logistics sectors. Transport Logistic 2025 on June 2-5 attracted 2 670 exhibitors from more than 70 countries, along with 80 000 professional visitors. More than 65% of the exhibitors were from outside Germany, including over 100 Chinese companies.

Themes included artificial intelligence, digitalisation and cybersecurity. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder said digitalisation is a decisive lever for modern logistics. ‘Digital applications make processes more efficient, more intelligent and therefore easier’, he said and AI ‘can help with planning optimal delivery routes, fleet management and predictive vehicle maintenance.’

Among the rail exhibitors, ÖBB Rail Cargo Group took delivery of its third Stadler EuroDual locomotive from leasing company European Loc Pool, and told Railway Gazette International that discussions about a potential fourth were underway.

RCG is using the leased EuroDuals to haul TransFLEX services, with drivers from MEV Deutschland instead of RCG staff. RCG said ’this collaborative approach ensures efficient co-ordination between logistical planning, asset management and operational implementation.‘

ELP is also seeking authorisation for Euro9000 locos in Poland, with a Euro9000 East variant to be equipped with the SHP and Mirel safety systems in addition to ETCS and PZB.

Elsewhere, Ermewa demonstrated a concept for a wagon with fully-automated opening tarpaulin, designed for transporting palletised goods.

Tatravagónka displayed an eight-axle TVP BOX Carrier wagon, with a tare weight of 30·8 tonnes and payload of 149·2 tonnes. Detachable twist locks allow for the transport of steel slabs, steel coils, tank containers or 12, 20, 30 and 40 ft containers. It has provision for fitting of the digital automatic coupler.

The company also exhibited its Light Eighty 160 km/h Sgns(s) 80’XLs flat wagon, which is DAC ready and equipped with electro-pneumatic brakes.
