Nordic Trials Begin for the Coradia Stream Train

As reported by Norske Tog, the first of 55 Coradia Stream electric multiple units has officially arrived in Norway. This marks a significant step forward for the state-owned rolling stock company, which is set to enhance its fleet with these modern trains.

The Class 77 trains are expected to start operations in June 2026 after undergoing rigorous testing, including trials in Norway’s challenging winter conditions and mountainous terrains.

Norske Tog entered into a €1.8 billion agreement with Alstom back in December 2021 to procure up to 200 Coradia Nordic EMUs—now known as Coradia Stream for the Nordics. The initial order included 30 units aimed at replacing aging trains that have been around for four decades, ensuring improved comfort and increased capacity for passengers. In February of this year, an additional firm order was placed for another batch of 25 units worth €230 million. So far, these orders encompass a total of 36 trains designed for local services running at speeds up to160 km/h on routes like L1 from Spikkestad through Oslo to Lillestrøm and L2 from Stabekk via Oslo to Ski; plus an additional fleet of19 EMUs capable of reaching speeds up to200 km/h intended for regional travel across eastern Norway.

The design lifespan of these new trains is projected at around four decades, featuring a modular design that allows operators adaptability in customizing interiors and amenities based on specific requirements.

A key highlight is their accessibility features: low-floor entrances make boarding easier, while wheelchair lifts and hearing loops cater specifically to those with mobility challenges or hearing impairments. An accessible toilet further enhances convenience.

“Ensuring our trains are accessible has been paramount,” stated Øystein Risan, CEO of Norske Tog during the unveiling event held at Bane Nor’s Grorud depot in Oslo on June10th. “These new models will provide a substantially more user-friendly experience—especially beneficial for wheelchair users as well as families traveling with strollers or cyclists.” .....
