Arriva Secures Contract to Operate Vechtdal Lines Train Services
According to a recent declaration, the provinces of Overijssel and Drenthe have decided to continue their partnership with Arriva for the upcoming Vechtdal Lines contract. This agreement will see Arriva managing regional passenger services along the 76 km route from zwolle to Emmen and the 19 km stretch connecting Almelo,Mariënberg, and Hardenberg.
This new contract is set to last for a significant period of 15 years starting in December 2028.The provinces plan to allocate an annual subsidy ranging from €12 million to €15 million based on how manny passengers use the service.
Arriva has been at the helm of these routes as back in 2012. They’ve reported that both ridership numbers and customer satisfaction have improved substantially due to enhancements like better scheduling and newer trains. Looking ahead,by late 2028,travelers can expect more frequent half-hourly services on the Almelo–Hardenberg line throughout most of the day. Additionally, there will be earlier departures and also later trains on the Zwolle–Emmen route along with increased peak-time services.
The company plans to upgrade its fleet of Stadler GTW electric multiple units by changing their color scheme from blue and white to a vibrant purple, blue, and green palette that reflects regional branding seen in Flevoland, Gelderland, and Overijssel. Enhancements will also include increased capacity for bicycles alongside reupholstered seating equipped with USB ports and folding tables for added convenience.
To meet rising demand anticipated after electrifying the Almelo–Mariënberg line—leading to retirement of current Alstom Lint DMUs—Overijssel intends to procure five four-car Stadler Flirt3 EMUs.
“We’re excited about this new chapter,” said Annemarie Hoogeveen, Arriva’s regional director when they announced their contract win on July 1st.
The bidding process included competitors like Keolis and QBuzz but ultimately led back to Arriva’s selection.
“In collaboration with Overijssel,” remarked Henk Jumelet from drenthe’s provincial council responsible for transport matters, “we’ve chosen a transport provider focused on comfort and quality for our travelers.” He emphasized that this concession aims at delivering reliable train connections tailored specifically for daily commuters’ needs while fostering an appealing public transport system that residents can depend upon.”
