The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is delving into weather past recalls for over a million Ram pickups effectively resolved a serious safety concern that could result in these vehicles rolling away unexpectedly.
A report from the NHTSA highlights that they have received at least 20 reports suggesting that previous fixes did not adequately tackle the problem. This includes six cases where seven individuals were injured and twelve incidents involving crashes or fires. The defect allows drivers to shift the transmission out of park without pressing the brake pedal or having a key in the ignition.
This investigation pertains to nearly 1.2 million Ram pickups manufactured between 2013 and 2018, which had already been recalled for this issue back in 2017 and 2018.
NHTSA officials are actively trying to figure out why these new roll-away events are happening and what other factors might be contributing to them.
