Siemens Transforms München Hub: From Metal Manufacturing to AI Innovation

According to a recent report from Siemens Mobility, the company has significantly enhanced its locomotive manufacturing facility in München-Allach,Germany. Toma Bačić shares insights from Bayern about this exciting growth.

On July 7,Siemens Mobility celebrated the expansion of its plant with an event attended by key figures from both Siemens AG and local government officials. The company has invested €250 million into this site, aiming to establish one of Europe’s most advanced factories for rolling stock and maintainance services.

This expansion has led to the creation of over 500 new jobs, bringing the total workforce to around 2,500 employees. The factory’s operational space has more than doubled—from 47,000 square meters to over 100,000 square meters—making it a central hub for producing Siemens’ Vectron locomotives. To date, more than 1,700 units have been manufactured there with a total order exceeding 2,700.

Siemens AG CEO Roland Busch remarked during the ceremony that Allach exemplifies how competitive manufacturing can thrive in Germany today through cutting-edge products and technologies like automation and artificial intelligence. He emphasized that their open business platform Siemens Xcelerator is paving the way for future mobility solutions.

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, highlighted that transforming their München-Allach facility into a global center of excellence combines efficiency with innovation. By integrating AI-driven applications alongside advanced production methods such as laser-guided assembly and robotics technology known as digital twins, they are redefining traditional rail manufacturing practices.

Home Base for Vectron

Peter praised the Vectron platform as a game-changer in their locomotive sector as its inception fifteen years ago. He noted that its modular design allows various configurations within one locomotive model—essential for meeting diverse safety regulations across Europe by accommodating different signaling systems tailored to client specifications.

With over 1.2 billion kilometers logged in service by Vectron locomotives worldwide—a testament to German engineering prowess—Siemens is proud not only of job creation but also consolidating essential functions like management and service at this location.

increased Production Capacity

The investment at Allach includes upgrading laser welding equipment while enhancing manual welding processes through innovative laser projection tools that ensure precision during assembly tasks. This modernization aims at improving overall production reliability and speed.

Additionally, digital tools are being integrated into loco production workflows; these include CAD image processing systems equipped with recognition software designed to identify assembly discrepancies on tablet screens instantly. Robotic devices are also being introduced for cabling tasks which streamline operations further—resulting in faster turnaround times on finished products.

Thanks to these advancements in technology and process optimization efforts at Allach—the output rate has surged dramatically: from just 90 Vectrons produced annually back in 2015 now up to an extraordinary capacity of producing one complete loco along with three cabs each day!

Standardization Across Models

A core principle behind the original design concept was standardization; currently around 85% of components across various sub-types share commonality—even extending this approach towards specialized models like those used by Finland’s VR railway system which require unique adaptations such as broad gauge bogies suited for winter conditions or electro-diesel variants known as Dual Mode locos.

Smartron’s Unique Positioning

Amongst different versions within the Vectron family lies Smartron—a cost-effective electric locomotive primarily aimed at independent freight operators within germany but gaining traction throughout Eastern Europe including countries like Bulgaria or Romania due largely because it offers high component compatibility compared against other models without being classified distinctly apart from them altogether! One amusing anecdote shared by staff members reflects Henry Ford’s famous quote regarding customization: “a Smartron can be any color you want—as long as it’s Capri blue.”

Commitment Towards Maintenance Services

While much attention was given towards new productions during celebrations surrounding expansions—it should be noted how vital maintenance operations remain integral hear too! With upgrades allowing upsurge capabilities—from handling merely twenty-four major overhauls yearly now reaching eighty—the facility ensures reliable performance longevity between significant servicing intervals estimated around eight years or approximately one point two million kilometers traveled before requiring extensive repairs!

Utilizing Railigent X analytics suite enables real-time data collection on operational performance facilitating quicker interventions when necessary while enhancing overall efficiency across both manufacturing & maintenance sectors alike!

Looking ahead toward future developments—Siemens envisions Allach becoming home base not just solely dedicated towards producing locomotives but also passenger coaches under ‘Vectrain’ concept designed specifically compatible alongside existing fleet perhaps yielding upwards near hundred eighty additional cars annually complementing current output levels achieved thus far!
