The UK’s Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE) has successfully cut and removed the fin from the Royal Navy’s decommissioned submarine, Swiftsure. The milestone was achieved at Babcock’s Rosyth facilities in Scotland.

According to the Ministry of Defence, this is the first time such a removal has taken place under the current dismantling programme. Swiftsure is set to become the first decommissioned Royal Navy submarine to be fully dismantled by the end of 2026.

So far, more than 500 tonnes of conventional waste have been taken out of Swiftsure, most of which has already been recycled. The project aims to recycle about 90% of the submarine’s total weight.

This innovative dismantling effort follows two rounds of public consultation in 2012 and 2015, and is part of the DNE’s commitment to safe and sustainable nuclear practices. By developing this unique method of disposal, the UK is creating a model that can be used for dismantling other
