

Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), has completed the initial sea trials of the Virginia-class attack submarine Massachusetts (SSN 798). This marks an important step in the vessel’s development before delivery to the United States Navy.
The trials, conducted over several days at sea, tested the submarine’s systems and capabilities. These included the first submergence of the vessel and high-speed manoeuvres both on the surface and while submerged.
The process is part of a larger testing programme at Newport News Shipbuilding ahead of the submarine’s formal handover to the U.S. Navy. Kari Wilkinson, President of Newport News Shipbuilding, said that the trial is an important step in ensuring the vessel is ready for operation.
