U.S defence firm Anduril has opened a new manufacturing centre in Sydney to build undersea drones called ‘Ghost Sharks’ and deliver on the Australian dollar 1.7 billion supply contract that it had signed with the Australian Navy.
Australia awarded the contract to Anduril in September to co-develop a fleet of Ghost Shark vessels in the next 5 years to join the Royal Australian Navy.
Dozens of drones will be built in Sydney and will then be exported to the U.S and other countries, after receiving the approval of the Australian government.
Anduril announced that the first vehicle was completed ahead of schedule and could go for testing before delivery in January.
The 7400 m2 plant will begin full-scale manufacturing in 2026 and is estimated to generate atleast 150 jobs.
Over 40 local businesses will also supply components of machines, parts and other raw materials required for the project.
“Today marks a defining moment in our mission to bring sovereign undersea capability to Australia,” Anduril Australia CEO
