A federal labour board has upheld the dismissal of a Canadian Coast Guard captain who failed to respond to a distress call from a grounded fishing boat in Malpeque Harbour, Prince Edward Island.
The board found that the captain continued sailing for several minutes after the mayday call was heard, and said his actions amounted to misconduct that justified termination.
The decision, recently released by Canada’s Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board, said the captain did not respond immediately, even though his vessel was close to the emergency.
The board said this behaviour raised concerns for public safety and the reputation of the Canadian Coast Guard.
The incident happened on May 13, 2024, when a mussel fishing boat named Knot a Chance ran aground on a sandbar in the narrow Malpeque Harbour channel on the northwestern coast of Prince Edward Island. The channel is known for its difficult navigation conditions.
