Germany has ruled out joining any international military mission to protect merchant ships sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important routes for oil shipments.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Sunday that Berlin will not take part in the conflict linked to rising tensions involving Donald Trump, Iran, and Israel.
Speaking to broadcaster ARD, Wadephul said the German government has a clear position and will not send forces to escort commercial ships in the waterway.
He said this decision has already been made clear by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.
Wadephul said Germany does not want to become directly involved in the conflict related to the growing tensions with Iran.
He said the United States and Israel have indicated that their goal is to weaken Iran’s military strength, including its nuclear and missile programmes.
