The wave of price hikes has not spared Greece’s favorite summer delight, as the cost of a single scoop of ice cream edges closer to 3 euros with the arrival of the warmer months.

Confectioners report that the surge in raw material costs has been especially harsh on chocolate, which has seen its price skyrocket by 80%. One business owner in the industry, who currently maintains the price of a scoop at 2 euros, admits uncertainty over how long he can continue absorbing the increasing operational costs.

The rising cost of ice cream means that a simple indulgence for a couple—whether in the city or on an island—could now cost up to 12 euros.

Classic summer favorites like cones, ice cream bars, and large family-sized packs have also been hit by the wave of inflation, with prices soaring across the board. Pre-packaged ice creams are now selling for 30 to 50 cents more than they did last year.

Kiosk owners confirm that while customers are still buying, they are purchasing less. Some reveal that many companies have even reduced the weight of their packaged products as a countermeasure to rising costs.
