Greek Cherry Harvest Devastated by Weather; Prices Skyrocket

Consumers across Greece are facing record-high prices for cherries this season, as extreme weather events have decimated production in key farming regions like Imathia and Pella in Central Macedonia, traditionally the backbone of the country’s cherry industry.

According to local producers and experts, the 2024 cherry season may be the worst in over two decades, with yields reportedly down by as much as 80%. The devastating impact is attributed to severe frost between March 19–21, during the peak of cherry tree blossoming, when temperatures plummeted to -7°C to -4°C. This was followed by hailstorms and heavy rains, further destroying what little crop remained.

“We’ve never seen a year like this since 2003,” said a cherry and peach farmer from Naousa in Imathia. “Two-thirds of the crop were destroyed by frost, and what survived was ruined by hail. Now, we’re seeing prices reach €7 per kilo, depending on quality, but most producers are just trying to survive.”
