According to an exclusive report by the British magazine The Critic, the Parthenon Marbles are set to return to Greece after George Osborne, chairman of the British Museum, reportedly agreed to give the artifacts back through a long-term loan.

As the report suggests, the move will not likely be blocked, as UK PM and Labor leader Keir Starmer has repeatedly expressed his commitment not to stand in the way of an agreement between the Greek government and the British Museum.

However, the report notes that a permanent transfer of the Parthenon Marbles to Athens would require the amendment of the British Museum Act of 1963, which prohibits the deaccessioning or disposal of objects from the museum’s collection.

Nevertheless, George Osborne’s plan to offer the Marbles as a long-term “loan” is seen as a legal workaround that bypasses the need to change the 1963 legislation.

Given that the Greek government insists on legal ownership of the sculptures, it is considered highly unlikely that the Marbles would ever return to Britain once sent to Athens.

Additionally, legislation passed by the Conservative government in 2022 has reportedly paved the way for circumventing the constraints of the 1963 Act, potentially facilitating a resolution.
