EU Targets Nord Stream in 18th round of Sanctions Against Russia

The European Commission, the European Union’s (EU) executive branch, on Tuesday

The European Commission, the European Union’s (EU) executive branch, on Tuesday presented a new sanctions package against Russia, the 18th since the start of the war in 2022, as Moscow refuses to suspend its attacks against Ukraine and engage in peace talks.

For the first time, the proposed measures include direct restrictions on both Nord Stream gas pipelines, alongside tougher measures on Russian oil and financial institutions.

A key feature of the proposal is the unprecedented move to ban any transactions involving the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines. If approved, this would mean that no European operator will be allowed to engage—directly or indirectly—in business dealings related to these specific energy infrastructures.

In addition, the commission is recommending a reduction in the price cap on Russian oil, lowering it from $60 to $45 per barrel.

These new sanctions are expected to be a central topic at the upcoming G7 summit in Canada, where global leaders will discuss coordinated strategies in response to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine and its broader economic impact.
