Greece has secured a leading role in the rapidly advancing field of quantum communications, with two landmark European projects placing the country at the forefront of technological innovation.

The Ministry of Digital Governance announced that Greece’s participation in the SEEWQCI (South-East Europe to Western Europe Quantum Communication Infrastructure) and TransEuroOGS projects received exceptionally high evaluations from the European Commission, scoring 24/25 and 23/25 respectively. These results confirm both the technological maturity of the proposals and the strategic significance of Greece’s role in building the European Quantum Communications Infrastructure (EuroQCI).

The SEEWQCI project, coordinated by Greece, will create a secure and scalable quantum communications corridor linking Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, and the Netherlands. With a total budget of 17.8 million euros, the initiative aims to interconnect national quantum infrastructures (NatQCIs), reinforcing Europe’s digital sovereignty and data security.

The success builds on the foundation of the HellasQCI project, launched in 2023, which established Greece as a serious contender in Europe’s quantum ecosystem.

The projects were developed under the Digital Governance Ministry and the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Posts, with technical oversight from the National Technology and Research Infrastructure Network.
