The Greek Ministry of Finance is offering taxpayers another chance to resolve pending tax cases with reductions of up to 75% on fines and surcharges, extending the mandate for its out-of-court settlement of tax disputes until March 2027.

Authorities are hoping the move will further ease the pressure on the judicial system, which faces a backlog of tens of thousands of cases, says Greek national broadcaster ERT.

As of May 2025, official figures from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) showed 37,262 tax cases awaiting trial, including 36,318 taxpayer appeals rejected by the Dispute Resolution Directorate.

Greece has extended its out-of-court tax dispute scheme, giving taxpayers with pending cases until July 2026 to apply. The program allows them to settle disputes with significant reductions in fines and interest — up to 75% if debts are paid quickly. Once accepted, settlements are final and cannot be appealed.

Settlement requires taxpayers to pay at least 30% of the principal tax owed within ten working days of signing the agreement. The remaining debt may be repaid in up to 24 installments, with penalty reductions depending on the number of installments.
