Grigoris Sklikas, CEO of the Hellenic Post (ELTA), has resigned following political tensions and criticism from members of parliament regarding his plan to close 204 underperforming post offices.
In his resignation letter to the ELTA Board and the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations (the “Hyperfund”), Sklikas highlighted the challenges of implementing necessary reforms amid political pressures. He specifically pointed to opposition from lawmakers representing regional constituencies, which he said made the “essential dialogue for implementing this plan extremely difficult.”
Sklikas emphasized that since taking over ELTA in 2023, he had applied his international business experience to address the decline in postal services, modernize the organization, and respond to an increasingly competitive market. Despite these efforts, he noted that the loss of over 90% of traditional mail volume had not been matched by adjustments in operational structures and costs, leaving the service financially unsustainable.
The proposed closures were part of a strategy to reduce inefficiencies and ensure the financial viability of ELTA. In his letter, Sklikas warned that failure to implement the plan could threaten the organization’s liquidity and its ability to pay staff salaries.
