The Greek state is in arrears to the private sector to the tune of €3.77 billion in September, according to the state general accounting office.

The debt to private sector entities is primarily from public hospitals, the National Organization for the Provision of Health Services (EOPYY), social security funds, and municipalities.

According to data from the General Accounting Office of the State, Greece’s total outstanding public sector arrears stood at €3.77 billion in September, slightly down from €3.882 billion in August but €717 million, or 23%, higher than in December 2024.

Public hospital debts have risen sharply, reaching €1.66 billion from €1.62 billion in August and €1.13 billion at the end of 2024, marking an increase of 43 percent within just nine months.

The Social Security Funds reported €612 million in outstanding liabilities compared to €651 million in August. Of this amount, €249 million originated from the EOPYY, which continues to delay payments to private healthcare providers. Despite the slight decrease every month, the debts of the Social Security Funds are up by 4.6% since the beginning of the year.

Other public legal entities also saw an increase in their arrears, which reached €222 million compared to €184 million
