Although January 2 is not an official public holiday, most retail stores across Greece are closed for annual inventory checks, while banks operate as normal and supermarket schedules vary
Retail stores across Greece remain closed today, January 2, despite the day not being classified as an official public holiday. The closure follows a long-standing practice in the Greek retail sector, allowing businesses to carry out annual inventory counts at the start of the year.

Supermarket operations vary by chain. Two major supermarket groups, Sklavenitis and Masoutis, are closed nationwide. Other major chains, including AB Vassilopoulos, My Market, Galaxias, Lidl and Kritikos, may operate on a case-by-case basis, with consumers advised to check each company’s official website for updated opening hours.

Banks, however, are operating normally today, providing full services to customers. The next nationwide bank closure is scheduled for January 6, which coincides with the Epiphany, a significant religious holiday in Greece.
