Greece has introduced a new digital tool designed to help the public easily identify areas where fishing is restricted, through an interactive online map displaying up-to-date information on regulated zones across the country’s seas.
The platform, launched by the Fisheries Control Directorate (HCG), aims to provide clear and reliable guidance on where professional fishing activities are prohibited, enhancing transparency and supporting compliance with national maritime regulations.
Interactive map shows restricted fishing zones
The new system allows users to view an electronic map that highlights active and inactive fishing restriction areas in real time, based on the date of each search. The tool is designed to be user-friendly and accessible, offering a visual overview of regulated maritime zones.
According to the announcement, the platform includes detailed information on different types of fishing restrictions, including areas with protected marine vegetation such as Posidonia seagrass beds, as defined by relevant environmental legislation.
It also outlines zones where specific fishing methods are restricted, including purse seine fishing and trawling, two commonly used commercial fishing techniques.
