OPSO warns residents of potential Bitcoin kiosk scam calls
MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a potential scam involving callers who claim people missed a court date, failed to appear for jury duty, or owe money.
According to OPSO, scammers are telling victims to go to a Bitcoin kiosk and send money to avoid a warrant being issued.
The sheriff’s office notes that this is false.
OPSO says scammers may tell people they will be detained if they come to the sheriff’s office to handle the issue in person.
That is also false.
OPSO notes that they will never do the following:
- Ask you to send money through a Bitcoin kiosk
- Demand payment over the phone to avoid arrest
- Tell you to resolve a warrant by sending cryptocurrency
If you receive a suspicious call, OPSO advises residents to:
- Not provide personal information
- Not send money
- Hang up immediately
- Contact OPSO directly
Scammers often use fear and urgency, urging residents to verify information before taking action, said OPSO.
