Port of Bilbao welcomes Onego Deusto on its first voyage with eSAIL wind-assisted technology

The Port of Bilbao has welcomed Onego Deusto, operated by Onego Shipping & Chartering, as its first port of call after departing Rotterdam equipped with advanced eSAIL suction sails.

This arrival marks a major milestone in the shared sustainability efforts of the Spanish port and the Dutch shipping company, highlighting a firm commitment to reducing the maritime sector’s carbon footprint.

Equipped with cutting-edge active suction sails, Onego Deusto is now among the pioneering vessels in the breakbulk cargo fleet utilizing wind-assisted propulsion.

The eSAIL system significantly enhances fuel efficiency—reducing consumption by up to 15% under optimal conditions—through intelligent harnessing of wind power. This leap in energy efficiency translates directly into lower CO₂ emissions, aligning with global decarbonization targets in maritime transport.

On this maiden voyage with sustainable propulsion, the vessel is en route to the Port of Houston carrying O-Next pipes from the Tubos Reunidos Group. These are part of the company’s Net Zero pipe range—the first seamless steel pipes on the market produced with zero CO₂ emissions.

Currently, the vessel operates on a bi-monthly schedule, prioritizing calls to ports in the US Gulf, including Houston and New Orleans, as well as ports along the Caribbean and US East Coast.
