Anemoi collaborates with Hafnia, GSI, and DNV to develop Rotor Sails for MR tankers

Anemoi Marine Technologies has announced a new collaboration with Hafnia, Guangzhou Shipyard International, and DNV to design and integrate Rotor Sails for 50,000 dwt Medium-Range (MR) tankers.
In April 2025, the four organizations signed a Joint Development Project (JDP) aimed at creating a new generation of efficient and environmentally friendly MR tanker designs equipped with Rotor Sails.
The initiative seeks to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions across the global MR tanker fleet.
As part of the JDP, Anemoi and Hafnia will carry out detailed engineering studies to determine how Rotor Sails can be safely and effectively installed on MR tankers.
These studies will also include the development of electrical and control system layouts and technical assessments of the sails’ impact on key regulatory metrics such as the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI).
GSI will contribute naval architecture and marine engineering expertise to develop essential technical documentation for the integration of Rotor Sails into tanker designs.
Meanwhile, DNV will conduct an Approval in Principle (AiP) review to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed designs and ensure they comply with current and anticipated class and regulatory standards.
Jesper Kristiansen, General Manager Technical at Hafnia, said that this collaboration supports Hafnia’s decarbonization strategy by embracing innovative technologies that boost fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
Nick Contopoulos, Chief Production and Partnerships Officer at Anemoi, said there is growing demand in the tanker sector for innovative technologies that can reduce emissions and enhance vessel value.
