Tripoli port operations halted after clashes erupt in Libya

Due to the ongoing security situation in Tripoli, Libya, port operations have been suspended until further notice.

The German ocean carrier Hapag-Lloyd announced the temporary suspension of all vessel calls to and from the port, while it will not accept any new bookings related to this port.

Clashes erupted last week across multiple districts of the Libyan capital, reportedly sparked by the killing of a prominent militia leader. The fighting, marked by the use of heavy weaponry in densely populated neighborhoods, forced hundreds of families to flee and overwhelmed local hospitals already operating under pressure.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged all parties to take urgent steps to consolidate the ceasefire. “The rapid nature of the escalation, which drew armed groups from outside the city and subjected heavily populated neighbourhoods to heavy artillery fire, was alarming,” his spokesperson said on 15 May.

“The Secretary-General reminds all parties of their obligation to protect civilians and calls on them to engage in serious dialogue in good faith to address the root causes of the conflict,” added the spokesperson.
