Sierra Leone’s Freetown Port prepares for digital transformation

A needs assessment mission conducted in Sierra Leone from 26 to 30 May has laid the groundwork for the introduction of a Maritime Single Window (MSW) system at the Port of Freetown.

The MSW is a centralized digital platform designed to streamline the exchange of information between various stakeholders and agencies involved in ship arrivals, port operations, and departures.

By consolidating formalities into a single system, the aim is to reduce processing time and operational costs.

As of 1 January 2024, all IMO Member States are mandated to implement maritime single window systems in their ports to improve the efficiency of global maritime transport.

The mission in Sierra Leone was led by IMO consultants working in partnership with the Port of Freetown, key government ministries, and public agencies such as customs and border control, alongside other stakeholders. It concluded with a joint stakeholder meeting to review and validate the findings.

The final mission report will serve as a roadmap for the MSW’s development in Sierra Leone, aligning with IMO standards and outlining the necessary IT infrastructure.

It will include strategic recommendations and incorporate a pre- and post-activity survey to assess stakeholder awareness of the system’s technical and operational requirements.
