ABS unveils breakthrough EV Battery Fire Simulation Model

American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has taken a significant step forward, developing an advanced simulation modeling of thermal runaway in Lithium-ion battery fires.

The model, now validated through joint research with Texas A&M University, enables detailed predictions of how battery fires behave at the cell level. This offers crucial insight into the total heat released during a thermal event and helps define effective firefighting strategies on board.

“Runaway electric vehicle fires can reach temperatures of 1,200°F (650°C) or higher and present unprecedented safety challenges to the shipping industry, which connects manufactured vehicles to global markets”, said Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman and CEO.

Beyond the simulation model, ABS has introduced the Enhanced Fire Protection notation EFP-C(EV), which lays out additional fire protection criteria for Ro-Ro cargo spaces carrying electric vehicles. The society has also published a Best Practices for the Transport of Electric Vehicles Advisory, which offers further guidance to vessel operators.
