Samsung Heavy Industries partners with ABB

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has signed a landmark agreement with ABB to equip a series of nine newbuild shuttle tankers with ABB’s advanced Onboard DC Grid™ power system. The technology is expected to significantly boost operational efficiency and lower emissions, while offering the flexibility to integrate multiple energy sources—a critical capability as the maritime sector transitions toward more sustainable solutions.

The tankers, slated for delivery beginning in 2027, will operate under bareboat charters supporting offshore operations in Brazil. SHI’s decision to adopt ABB’s power platform reflects a strong focus on fuel optimization, reliability, and future-proofing its fleet in line with increasingly stringent industry standards.

This agreement represents ABB’s largest contract to date for its Onboard DC Grid™ technology in the shuttle tanker market. Designed for versatility, the system delivers high levels of redundancy and enables efficient energy distribution across low-voltage installations, making it well-suited for a broad range of vessel types.
