Deltamarin works with Maersk, class societies on ammonia-powered boxship design

Finnish ship designer Deltamarin, a subsidiary of Chinese shipbuilder AVIC Weihai, has designed a 3,500 TEU ammonia-powered ship.

Deltamarin teamed with Maersk Line, Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to design the vessel, aiming to address safety considerations for ammonia to be a viable marine fuel.

Ammonia has been touted as a marine fuel to achieve decarbonisation. However, toxicity and the risk of leaks present safety issues.
