Port of Long Beach breaks ground on major terminal upgrade

A major terminal expansion project is now underway at the Port of Long Beach, as International Transportation Service (ITS) officially broke ground Friday on a US$365 million development aimed at boosting cargo capacity and improving operational efficiency.
The project will add 19 acres of new land by filling in an unused slip located in the center of ITS’s Pier G terminal. A key feature of the expansion includes the construction of a 3,400-foot-long continuous wharf.
Once complete, the new berth will be able to accommodate two of the world’s largest container ships at the same time.
”This investment by ITS will create benefits for decades to come with more cargo moving smoothly without delays and greater opportunities for waterfront labor”, said Rex Richardson, Mayor, Long Beach.
”ITS’ commitment to further greening its operations, increasing capacity and strengthening its ties to the Port of Long Beach is even stronger than it was nearly 20 years ago”, said Mario Cordero, CEO, Port of Long Beach.
”This project strengthens America’s supply chain by investing in infrastructure the right way”, said Kim Holtermand, CEO, ITS Long Beach.
”ITS has been a powerful force for environmental stewardship in our green port by modernizing terminal operations and moving more cargo containers by rail”, commented Bonnie Lowenthal, President, Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners.
The fill for the project, about 2.5 million cubic yards of sediment, will come from material already located within the Harbor District. Construction is slated for completion by late 2028.
