SC Ports sees steady growth in containers and rail cargo in FY25

South Carolina Ports wrapped up fiscal year 2025 with strong numbers, showing growth in both container volumes and rail cargo.
The port handled 2.6 million TEUs over the past year, a 3% increase from FY24. Rail moves also climbed, up 4% thanks to demand at the Port of Charleston and its two inland rail terminals.
Despite ongoing global trade shifts, SC Ports continues to offer dependable service. With deep harbor access and efficient terminals, Charleston remains a key logistics hub for the Southeast.
”South Carolina Ports and our maritime community operate a well-run port with quick access to the U.S. Southeast market, benefitting mega retailers, advanced manufacturers, refrigerated goods shippers, farmers and small businesses,” commented Barbara Melvin, President and CEO, SC Ports.
Railed cargo was a standout this year. Inland Port Greer set a new record with 205,523 rail moves, a nearly 10% increase. It’s the first time the terminal has broken 200,000 moves in a year. Recent expansion at Greer has doubled its cargo capacity.
Meanwhile, Inland Port Dillon moved 33,838 rail containers, holding steady in the second half of the year.
SC Ports also handled 165,949 finished vehicles across its docks in FY25.
Looking ahead, the port authority is focused on long-term growth. That includes boosting capacity in Charleston and expanding intermodal services across the state.
Work is underway on a second berth at Leatherman Terminal and a new rail yard, set to open in 2026. The Leatherman Rail Yard will offer a 1 million lift capacity and faster rail access to inland markets.
