SAAM Towage Uruguay offsets entire carbon footprint

SAAM Towage Uruguay has achieved a major sustainability milestone. The company fully neutralized its 2024 carbon footprint in the country by offsetting 100% of its Scope 1 emissions.
The operator verified the removal of 6,130 verified carbon units (VCUs), acquired through the Montes del Este forestry project in central-eastern Uruguay. The project, part of the Verified Carbon Standard program, plants high-quality timber on degraded pastures.
Country Manager Javiera Hevia explained that the initiative is part of SAAM Towage’s broader sustainability strategy launched in 2022. “We began by measuring our greenhouse gas emissions, then built a systematic plan and methodology,” she said.
The company audited its emissions data with Bureau Veritas before implementing efficiency measures. These included controlling tug speed and connecting vessels to onshore power while docked. Remaining emissions were offset with carbon credits.
“This achievement marks the end of an important process and a boost for the future,” Hevia noted.
