SeaBot Maritime and the University of Plymouth partner

SeaBot Maritime has joined forces with the University of Plymouth to expand its maritime autonomy training into South West England. The partnership marks a major step in growing the UK’s network of autonomous maritime professionals.

SeaBot Maritime, known for its Flag State-recognised Remote USV Operator training, has already trained hundreds of professionals across the Solent in collaboration with the National Oceanography Centre, the University of Southampton, the Royal Navy, and the Royal Marines.

Under a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), both organisations will work together to:

  • Develop and deliver new training programmes.
  • Advance research in autonomous maritime systems.
  • Equip the future workforce with high-demand skills in intelligent maritime technologies.

The partnership combines SeaBot Maritime’s industry experience with the University of Plymouth’s research and teaching expertise. It builds on Plymouth’s role as the UK’s National Centre for Marine Autonomy.

SeaBot Maritime and the University will co-develop courses and modules, train University staff to deliver programmes, and seek joint funding for training and research projects. They also plan to develop Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS) standards and include SeaBot’s MASS Remote Operator Certification in the University’s academic portfolio.

In addition, future plans include creating a dedicated marine autonomy training centre to meet the rising demand for skilled professionals in this fast-growing field. The partnership will also support joint research and international funding projects. All of these expand knowledge and strengthen collaboration between academia and industry.

Gordon Meadow, CEO of SeaBot Maritime, said:

“This partnership marks a key milestone for UK maritime autonomy. Expanding into Plymouth connects two of the UK’s leading maritime innovation hubs. From 2026, students in the South West will have direct access to our Remote USV Operator Training. Together, we’re preparing the next generation of professionals to lead safe, intelligent, and uncrewed maritime operations.”

Professor Chris Fogwill, Executive Dean for Science and Engineering at the University of Plymouth, added:

“This agreement strengthens Plymouth’s role as the UK’s National Centre for Marine Autonomy. Working with SeaBot Maritime, we will drive innovation in remote and autonomous vessel operations and ensure our students gain the cutting-edge skills industry needs.”

The partnership highlights both organisations’ commitment to innovation, sustainability, and future skills development, reinforcing the UK’s position as a global leader in maritime autonomy and AI-driven technologies.

Lastly, courses developed under this partnership will begin in 2026, linking the Solent and South West regions and boosting the UK’s leadership in maritime innovation.
