Greece’s merchant fleet grows slightly in September
Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) has released the latest figures on the country’s merchant fleet of vessels 100 GT and above for September 2025.
According to the data, the number of Greek merchant vessels increased by 0.4% compared with September 2024, the same rate of annual growth recorded a year earlier.
However, despite the slight rise in vessel numbers, the total tonnage of the fleet fell by 3.8% year-on-year, following a 2.9% decline recorded in the previous annual comparison.
Breaking down the fleet by vessel type:
-
Total fleet: 1,842 vessels / 34.96 million GT
-
Freighters: 353 vessels (-1.1%) / tonnage down 6.1%
-
Tankers: 405 vessels (-1.2%) / tonnage down 3.0%
-
Passenger ships: 802 vessels (+1.8%) / tonnage down 2.3%
-
Other vessel types: 282 vessels (+1.1%) / tonnage up 1.0%
The data shows a fleet that is growing in number but shrinking in weight, indicating a shift toward smaller or newer vessels and the gradual phase-out of older, larger units. This structural change continues a trend seen in recent years, reflecting modernization efforts and evolving market dynamics within the Greek shipping sector.
