Alfa Laval and Hanwha Ocean Ecotech partner on ammonia fuel systems
Alfa Laval Korea Ltd. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hanwha Ocean Ecotech to develop safe and reliable ammonia fuel systems for dual-fuel vessels. The partnership supports the maritime industry’s shift toward low-carbon and alternative fuels.
The collaboration combines Alfa Laval’s expertise in ammonia fuel systems with Hanwha’s marine technology capabilities. The companies aim to secure early market opportunities and strengthen their competitive position in alternative marine fuels. The MOU covers joint business development, project opportunities, and plans for a pilot installation.
Alfa Laval will provide its ammonia fuel supply system, Fuel Supply System (FSS), and Ammonia Release Mitigation System (ARMS), while Hanwha will contribute its system engineering and integration expertise. The partnership focuses on improving onboard safety, productivity, and reliability.
Young-Gu Choi, Managing Director of Alfa Laval Korea, said, “This MOU represents a strategic partnership to secure leadership in Korea and Asia’s sustainable shipbuilding market. By combining our strengths, we aim to accelerate the decarbonization of global shipping.”
Chang-Keun Lee, CEO of Hanwha Ocean Ecotech, added, “Partnering with Alfa Laval allows us to deliver safer and more efficient ammonia fuel systems. Pilot projects and commercial projects will maximize synergies and create value for the maritime industry.”
The signing took place at Alfa Laval’s booth during Kormarine 2025. Alfa Laval is also working on ammonia fuel projects with WinGD, K Shipbuilding (KSB), and ABS, demonstrating its commitment to safe ammonia adoption through innovation and industry collaboration.
