DNV and Menon Economics introduce first global ranking of container ports

DNV and Menon Economics have launched the world’s first global ranking of container ports, placing Singapore at the top in the inaugural 2025 edition.

The new index, titled The Leading Container Ports of the World 2025, evaluates 160 ports using 35 indicators across five areas: governance and enablers, connectivity and customer value, productivity, sustainability, and overall impact. The aim is to provide the industry with a transparent and data-driven benchmark.

Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Rotterdam and Busan complete the global top five. According to the report, the best-performing ports share strong leadership, high connectivity and focused investment in digitalisation and emissions reduction.

The study also highlights a wider shift across the sector. Many ports outside the top tier are improving capacity, service quality and green energy use to build more resilient and sustainable operations.

In addition, the report names regional leaders, including New York & New Jersey, Hamburg, Tanger Med, Jebel Ali and Sydney.
