DNV, Equinor and TotalEnergies launch CETO II to advance low-pressure CO₂ shipping
DNV, Equinor and TotalEnergies have launched the second phase of the CETO (CO₂ Efficiently Transported via Ocean) joint industry project. The project aims to de-risk low-pressure CO₂ shipping, with a strong focus on CO₂ composition and impurities. GASSNOVA supports the project through the CLIMIT programme.
CETO II will generate experimental data to help define CO₂ product specifications for low-pressure ship transport in carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chains. These specifications will guide system design, material selection and operations.
Ship transport is critical for CCS where capture sites and storage locations cannot be connected by pipelines. A low-pressure shipping concept offers a scalable and flexible solution for long-distance CO₂ transport.
The new phase follows the successful completion of CETO Phase I in July 2024, which proved that low-pressure CO₂ shipping is technically feasible and ready for early deployment. However, the industry still lacks a dedicated CO₂ product specification for these conditions.
CETO II will calibrate existing prediction models using real experimental data. The research will focus on chemical reactions and acid solubility limits, improving understanding of how impurities behave in CO₂ under shipping conditions.
Erik Mathias Sørhaug, Business Development Director CO₂ Shipping at DNV, said the project will fill key industry knowledge gaps and help define safe and reliable standards for large-scale CO₂ transport.
Equinor’s Ola Terjeson Miljeteig said low-pressure ship transport is a competitive solution for CCS, and that defining product specifications is essential for its success.
Renaud Maillard, Vice President CO₂ Techno Hub at TotalEnergies, added that the project supports the company’s efforts to develop safe and efficient CO₂ transport pathways.
The partners are also inviting new participants to join the JIP and expand the project’s scope to other areas of CO₂ carrier design and operation.
