Wärtsilä to power Skarv’s new cargo vessel with ammonia engine

Wärtsilä will supply its Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia solution to a new cargo vessel for Norway-based Skarv Shipping Solutions.

The vessel will be built at Huanghai Shipyard in China. It will be the first newbuild to use this ammonia-powered solution. The order was booked in Q4 2025.

The four-stroke engine will significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions. It supports Skarv’s goal to deliver low-carbon short-sea shipping in Northern Europe.

Wärtsilä will also supply the fuel gas supply system and exhaust after-treatment. The full package includes the Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia engine, AmmoniaPac, WARMS safety system, and an ammonia-ready SCR unit.

When running on sustainable ammonia, the engine can cut total greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% compared with diesel. This exceeds the IMO 2040 target and meets the EU 2050 goals.

“Our aim is to renew the European short-sea fleet and make it climate-friendly,” said Jan Øivind Svardal, CEO of Skarv Shipping Solutions. “We see ammonia as a future fuel, and Wärtsilä is leading the way.”

Ammonia is expected to play a key role in reaching net-zero shipping by 2050. Wärtsilä research shows that efficiency measures alone can cut emissions by up to 27%, while sustainable fuels must remove the remaining 73%.

“This solution is the result of years of research and testing,” said Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine. “It delivers high safety, efficiency, and reliability, and it is ready for use today.”

The engine is based on Wärtsilä’s proven low-pressure dual-fuel technology. Equipment delivery for the vessel will begin in Q4 2026.
